The year was 2009 and it coming to an end. During Christmas Eve NBA star Gilbert Arenas pulled out a gun in the locker room in front of his teammates. With the decision his NBA career would be forever changed. He was one of the top players in the league before the incident thanks to his scoring ability and game winning shots. Arenas had a lot of potential, but sadly no one was ever able to see it. His career will always be considered a, “What if story.” Arenas took the risk of bringing the gun with him to the locker room and acted as if to shoot his teammates. This one decision for amusement affected his career. Arenas gun incident affected his career because he was suspended from the NBA, lost money, and gained a criminal record.
Arenas
was suspended from the NBA for the rest of the season following the gun
incident. Arenas rick of bringing the gun was the worst decision he can ever
do. With the suspension from the league his team the Wizards has lost their
best player. Who was going to take over the Wizards and make them a contender
for the championship? The Wizards lost their Agent Zero as the fans like to
refer Arenas by. The games he was unable to play in put his basketball career
on hiatus. For example, by the time he was actually able to come back to the
NBA he was not the same player he once was. He was lost in the shadow when he
returned. The major difficulty of being suspended from the NBA is the time away
from the league as competition is becoming stronger and faster. With his career
on hold he was never able to become the player he was before. Arenas also had
to deal with the loss of money.
He had
lost so much money because of the gun incident. He lost his biggest sponsorship
Adidas which affected him to lose income. As stated above, Arenas was suspended
from the NBA and lost his remaining pay for the season. His income was now
obliterated with the loss of salary and endorsement deals. Arenas career was
put on jeopardy because of his expenses he had to pay. With the stoppage of
income his savings account was eventually decreasing. One risk caused him to
lose millions. As now he had to change his lifestyle because he will never be
making the same amount of money again. With his decision he was also in trouble
with the law.
Arenas
gained a criminal record with the decision he made. He decided to bring a gun
to the locker room and act as if he was shooting people. For what idiotic
reasoning did he have for this? Arenas had to serve jail time and now he has a
criminal record. No one would ever be considered a good and loyal person with a
criminal record. Now he has to pay the consequences of his actions. With being
labeled with a criminal record this caused teams not wanting to have anything
to do with him. I am pretty sure he did think the gun incident was funny when
he was in the jail cell.
To sum
up, taking one risk can affect a career. His actions ended his career. Arenas
gun incident affected his career because he was suspended from the NBA, lost
money, and gained a criminal record. With time away from the league he was not
able to bounce back into the paper he once was. After the incident his income
was shattered and lost millions. With a criminal record on his resume the
attitudes people thought of him changed. In the end, never handle guns because
of the many horrible outcomes.
